"Garcia Grisman" - Claimed to be the only self-portrait of Jerry Garcia.

SAN DIEGO, CA April 30, 2004 -- Highly sought by music lovers, art aficionados, and of course "Deadheads", this piece, claimed to be the only Jerry Garcia self-portrait, is immediately available, exclusively with the Imperial Eye®.

Jerry Garcia was known lovingly as a true hippie who stayed that way — or, as affectionately spoken by a vast number of young people since the 60's, he never "sold out". His fame began in San Francisco as the lead guitarist and lead vocalist for the band "The Grateful Dead", a folksy-rock band. Garcia and "The Dead's" reputation grew over their three decades beyond just being versatile musicians and lyricists, to, like bard's and mice, include a huge cultural following of Grateful Dead music and lifestyle indulgers, who called themselves "Deadheads".

Beyond music: Garcia's personal convictions in the arts were not quenched fully by music and writing. In younger days he attended the San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied with Wally Hedrick, whose art was mostly conceptual but with styles including figurative, political and appropriated imagery—sometimes merging themes, and Elmer Bischoff, an abstract expressionist.

Visual art created another means of expression for Garcia. He created nearly 500 pieces of art between 1985 and 1995 using watercolor, gouache, pencil, ink, airbrush and digital media. Only around 20% of his works have been properly archived. During the last years of his life Garcia held a number of art shows and sold hundreds of his original works and thousands of lithographs. Very few names are chronicled of those who bought Garcia's work while he was living. All in all, record keeping of the Garcia works was poor.

In his later years, health declining, Garcia stayed busy with a number of musicians other than his own Jerry Garcia Band and The Grateful Dead, including the likes of his old friend David Grisman. The two recorded a series of projects, one being Not for Kids Only, described by some as, a "fruitful collaboration," and, "lighthearted."

"Garcia Grisman", the album cover of Not for Kids Only skews the line, as the album title suggests, between children and adults, which may have been Garcia's and all folk artists ultimate goal in that music genre.

The extremely rare 10" X 10" unframed lithograph with silk screen signature by Jerry Garcia is Copyright by the Jerry Garcia Estate and sold exclusively on the Imperial Eye® website.
